Tefillin for Women, by Women →
When Molly Moses graduated from Harvard University in 2011, she wanted to pray each day wearing tefillin. But she couldn’t afford the several hundred dollar investment required to buy a pair of the leather-covered boxes, which contain tiny parchments with handwritten Torah verses. Moses had borrowed tefillin from friends in the past; now she wanted her own set.
She had heard of organizations...

What song did your parents introduce you to?
nprmusic:
Today on All Things Considered, Broadway star Audra McDonald begins a new series: Mom and Dad’s Record Collection. She shares the story of how a music box’s “Edelweiss” melody became her first audition with her dad at the piano.
We want your stories, too. What song did your parents introduce you to? What’s the memory attached to it?
As a child, my mother used to sing “I want...

Jews, Food, and Socialism
historicity-was-already-taken:
I spent the last two weeks reading 13 books in preparation for a 20-page historiography paper about how Jewish women experienced acculturation in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and then writing said historiography paper. So you are all are in for at least three related posts.
In traditional Eastern European Jewish society, and specifically within...

The Great Gatsby: some more thoughts.
Now that I’ve calmed down a bit, I’d like to articulate a bit more clearly why the new The Great Gatsby looks terrible: the answer lies in the difference between Baz Lurhmann and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Luhrmann doing Luhrmann is gaudy decadence. It works, 100% for Moulin Rouge! I even think there is space for his Romeo + Juliet. Fitzgerald, on the other hand, is understated decadence....

beyond the anti-Semitic tripe that was Jezebel’s coverage of the asifa and the “we choose our choice, and anyway every community has problems” denial of the Orthodox

yes yes yes

When stressed out, massage chairs, riddle-telling manicurists, and 400 calories of chocolate WILL make you feel better about the unending turmoil the next three months of your life is going to be.

Non-Orthodoxy & Social Clubs - An Anon Follow-up
lazersilberstein:
jewishatheist:
I received a reply last night to my post {link} where I last explained why I think reform judaism is basically a social club. I also posed a question there, “Do you see the practices you mentioned as divine commandments or as personal choices based on tradition?” which the anon addresses.
The short of it is that I wasn’t all that swayed from the anon’s...

The group suggested hiring as a spokesman an “extremely literate conservative African-American” who can argue that Mr. Obama misled the nation by presenting himself as what the proposal calls a “metrosexual, black Abe Lincoln.”

This post should be subtitled, “how reading feminism into Leviticus brought me closer to God in the most nerdy way possible.”

My mother
Since it’s Mother’s Day, I thought I’d just take a moment to tell you why mom is my hero. I know most people will say something like this at least once in their lifetime, but my mom taught me, without ever saying the word, what it means to be a strong woman and what it means to be a feminist. And because she never said the word, I grew up believing that it was natural to be like...

Jewish Daily Forward: Three Reasons Obama's Right... →
Which brings me to my third point, which is the religious nature of Obama’s statement itself. What the President said today means little as a statement of public policy since it has little impact “on the ground.” It means more as an expression of personal conviction and conscience. What he said was that, over time, he has seen the truth of same-sex couples: that they are as capable of...

Kindly get the fuck out.
First of all, you are not my coach. No one tells me what to do with my body or my skating except the person I pay to be my coach. And I repeat, you are not her.
Second of all, you’re not even a figure skater. So where do you get off trying to tell me that I’m “putting too much pressure” on my ankles when you don’t even understand what it is...
